Community Service Requirement

All medical students are required to complete 15 (fifteen) hours of health related community service. Students may file a yearly report on their activities on our website or complete a report form before January of their 4th year (reporting forms are available in the CBE office). The community service requirement grew out of a tradition of community service involvement by University of Connecticut medical students and a desire to provide institutional support for these activities. Community service activities include health promotion, intervention, and clinical care. Dental, MPH and other graduate students are invited to participate in these activities.

Goals

General goals for this experience include:

  • Incorporating clinical skills into community settings
  • Augmenting professional education through experience with community activities
  • Contributing needed services to the community

There is an oversight committee with representation from students, faculty, and community leaders. The role of the oversight committee is to help students who want to develop new projects with suggestions and resources. Additional information and resources are available in the Office of Community Based Education, Department of Community Medicine, located in AG073; Telephone: 679-3482.

Available in PDF format is a list of existing, established projects, from which you may choose. Students may also create a new project in conjunction with their Student Continuity Practice or in another community practice. All new projects should be developed with the Office of Community Based Education.

If you are interested in developing a project in addition to the established and ongoing ones, please contact Judy Lewis, Director, Community Based Education, or Stacey Brown Lindsay, Community Liaison, at: ext. 3482, or at the Office of Community Based Education, located in the Academic Building, AG073.
