Admissions - Ph.D. in Public Health

Admission to the doctoral program is competitive and students will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to public health, academic preparation and background.

Admission Criteria

We expect applicants to the doctoral degree to demonstrate commitment to public health through education, professional experience or volunteer service. In addition, our most competitive applicants:

  • Have completed a rigorous baccalaureate degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum graduate point average of 3.0/4.0 in all courses of record at the undergraduate and graduate level of study. Though not required, a Master’s degree is highly preferred.
  • Show evidence of having completed graduate courses with grades of B or better in least three of the five core disciplines of public health (Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Occupational/Environmental Health, Behavioral Sciences, and Health Services Administration). A curriculum checklist should be completed and submitted with an application packet. Accepted students who have not met this condition will be expected to complete this pre-requisite before admission or upon matriculation in the doctoral program. Credits earned in completing any of these core course will not count toward the 45 credit degree

Graduate Assistantships

The program offers a limited number of graduate fellowships or assistantships that provide stipends and tuition waivers. In addition, students will appropriate backgrounds may be offered financial support though assistantships and employment with program faculty. Funding decisions will be made at the time individuals apply to the program. General information, such as financial aid is available at the Graduate School website.

Application to the program

Prospective students apply directly to the Graduate School, which sets admissions regulations and policies for all graduate programs at the University of Connecticut. Completed applications are then forwarded to the Graduate Program in Public Health for review.

  • Online application is the method for applying to the UConn Graduate School.  A $75 fee must be paid with a credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover).

Applicants must provide the following items to the Graduate School Admissions Office:

  • Graduate School Application form completed online ($75 fee).
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores taken within the past 5 years.
  • A current official transcript from each university-level school attended by the applicant.
  • Three (3) current letters of reference from faculty or others who can address your potential for success in the doctoral program.
  • All domestic applicants must complete the Residence Affidavit for in-state tuition status. Without this document you cannot qualify for in-state tuition rates. If you are not a Connecticut resident please check the appropriate box and upload.
  • A recent TOEFL test score if English is not your native language.
  • A personal statement expressing your reasons for applying to our program, your educational and professional goals, and a description of all relevant research and professional experiences to date. This statement should also include a suggestion of 2-3 members of our faculty whose work most interests you and might serve as academic advisors.
  • core coursework form must be filled out with your application.

Deadlines

To assure full consideration, applications must be received for program review by January 1st  for international applicants and January 15th for U.S. applicants.
