Research Projects

The Health Services Research Unit focuses its health services research typically in the field of substance abuse. The scope and magnitude of each of the projects varies greatly. The Health Services Research Unit's projects are funded by federal, state, and local government agencies as well as private foundations. Below you will find a listing of the unit's currently funded research projects with a brief description.

Health Assist Project: Brief Intervention for Drug Abuse Using the WHO Assist

Total Award: $1,087,500

Randomized clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of a Brief Intervention for illicit drug use (cannabis, cocaine, opioids, and amphetamines) as linked to the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST). Part of a multicenter trial being conducted in five countries under sponsorship of the World Health Organization to investigate early intervention in primary health care.

Smoke Screen: Brief Interventions for Nicotine & Cannabis Use

Randomized clinical trial in primary care settings to evaluate the efficacy of sequential brief interventions for young adult cannabis users who are also cigarette smokers.

 

ConnecticutScreening & Brief Intervention – Targeted Capacity Expansion

This Targeted Capacity Expansion contract supports training and ongoing supervision in the implementation of alcohol and drug screening and brief interventions at selected Federally Qualified Health Centers and Emergency Department sites in Connecticut.

 

New Dental Education Models

This project supports a three-year feasibility study and national conference on new models for educating dentists.

 

Pipeline, Profession & Practice: Community-Based Dental Education

Principal Investigator: Bailit, H.

November 2001 - June 2007

Funding Source: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/Columbia U/Hartford Hospital

Total Award: $386,131

This project is designed to 1) assist the transition of dental education from academic settings into the community; 2) provide greater access to dental care for the underserved; and 3) provide increased educational opportunities in dentistry to underrepresented populations. Eleven dental schools participate in this project.

 

Pipeline, Profession & Practice: Community-Based Dental Education/The California,Initiative

This project is designed to 1) assist the transition of dental education from academic settings into the community; 2) provide greater access to dental care for the underserved; and 3) provide increased educational opportunities in dentistry to underrepresented populations. Four additional dental schools, all sites in California, participate in this project.

 

The Hartford Youth Project

The purpose of this project is to enhance the substance abuse treatment delivery system for youth in Hartford by creating a network of providers with training in a continuum of exemplary treatment models and by implementing a community-based outreach system to increase referrals and linkages to treatment.

 

Connecticut Screening and Brief Intervention Program (CT-SBIRT-TCE-SBI Evaluation)

Connecticut SMART Moves Plus Ecstasy and Other Club Drugs

To expand effective, culturally appropriate drug prevention and intervention services for users of ecstasy and other club drugs.

 

Connecticut Strategic Prevention Framework - State Incentive Grant

This project is developing a comprehensive and unified statewide Strategic Plan for delivering and implementing effective substance abuse prevention and/or mental health promotion services in Connecticut.

 

Evaluating Alcohol Brief Intervention Implementation

This is a cross-national evaluation of screening and brief intervention programs in Primary Care settings within large population areas in Brazil and South Africa.

 

Screening, Brief Intervention, Brief Treatment and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

This is a five-year evaluation of CSAT’s Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment demonstration program in seven states, being conducted in collaboration with the Research Triangle Institute.

 

State Incentive Grant Enhancement: Data Infrastructure and Evaluation

To develop a comprehensive strategy for implementing evidence-based prevention/early intervention programs that reduce the progression of substance use among young adults, college settings.

 

Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Block Grant – Data Infrastructure Project

The purpose of this project is to enhance the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services substance abuse treatment data collection, processing and reporting capability.

 

Support for Project MATCH Website and Data Dissemination

September 2004 - September 2005

Funding Source: DHHS/NIH/NIAAA

Total Award: $20,000

This contract maintains and updates the Project MATCH website as a resource to the alcohol research community to fulfill the NIH mandate on data sharing for this large multi-center clinical trial of alcoholism treatment.
