A variety of files developed by Connecticut's State Epidemiological Workgroup (SEW) in support of the State of Connecticut's Strategic Prevention Framework - State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG) awarded to the Governor's Office and administered by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Social Indicator Data

Documents in PDF format may be opened with the free internet browser plug-in called Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available from Adobe's web site. Microsoft Word (.DOC), Excel (.XLS) and PowerPoint (.PPT) files, designated by their appropriate file extension, may be downloaded to your computer's hard drive and viewed with the appropriate program. If you do not have Microsoft Excel, download the Microsoft Excel 2003 Viewer from Microsoft free of charge. PNG, GIF, or JPG/JPEG are image file formats which can be used to insert a picture into desktop publishing programs like Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, etc. Zip files are compressed archives containing one or more files which must first be decompressed on your computer with a program like WinZip or PKUnzip (both programs have a free trial period). Since zip files are compressed, they typically can be downloaded faster but a little extra work is involved to "unzip" the contents prior to use.

To Download a file and save it to your computer's hard drive, right click on the hyperlink and choose "Save File/Target As."

Community Readiness Assessment for Substance Use Prevention Results

Community Readiness Assessment survey reports were compiled by the University of Connecticut Health Center on the readiness and capacity of the state's 15 sub-regions in 2006. The sub-region's information should be compared to that of the state as a whole. All Community Readiness Profiles are in PDF format and are approximately 32 KB in size.

• Sub-Region 1-A: Includes the Southwestern Connecticut cities and towns of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan and Stamford.
• Sub-Region 1-B: Includes the Southwestern Connecticut cities and towns of Norwalk, Westport, Weston, and Wilton.
• Sub-Region 1-C: Includes the Soouthwestern Connecticut cities and towns of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull.
• Sub-Region 2-A: Includes the city of Meriden and the town of Wallingford.
• Sub-Region 2-B: Includes the South Central Connecticut cities and towns of Bethany, Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, West Haven, and Woodbridge.
• Sub-Region 2-C: Includes the cities and towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton.
• Sub-Region 2-D: Includes all 15 cities and towns in Middlesex County.
• Sub-Region 3-A: Includes the Northeastern Connecticut cities and towns of Ashford, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Chaplin, Columbia, Coventry, Eastford, Hampton, Killingly, Lebanon, Mansfield, Plainfield, Pomfret, Putnam, Scotland, Sterling, Thompson, Union, Willington, Windham, and Woodstock.
• Sub-Region 3-B: Includes the Southeastern Connecticut cities and towns of Bozrah, Colchester, East Lyme, Franklin, Griswold, Groton, Ledyard, Lisbon, Lyme, Montville, New London, North Stonington, Norwich, Old Lyme, Preston, Salem, Sprague, Stonington, Voluntown, and Waterford.
• Sub-Region 4-A: Includes the cities and towns of Andover, Bolton, East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, Enfield, Glastonbury, Hebron, Manchester, Marlborough, Somers, South Windsor, Stafford, Tolland, and Vernon.
• Sub-Region 4-B: Includes the cities and towns of Avon, Bloomfield, Canton, East Granby, Farmington, Granby, Hartford, Hartland, Newington, Rocky Hill, Simsbury, Suffield, West Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.
• Sub-Region 4-C and 5-C: Includes the cities and towns of Barkhamsted, Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Colebrook, Harwinton, New Britain, New Hartford, Norfolk, Plainville, Plymouth, Southington, Torrington, and Winchester.
• Sub-Region 5-A: Includes the cities and towns of Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Canaan, Cornwall, Danbury, Goshen, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, North Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Salisbury, Sharon, Sherman, Warren, and Washington.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Epidemiological Data Social Indicator Maps

A listing of the individual GIS maps which have been developed for the project. These files are great if you wanted to print the maps in color. Choose the social indicator map compilation to download them all as a group, otherwise use the individual map files as you need them.

Other Useful Data Sources for Developing the Sub-regional and Regional Epidemiological Profiles

• Census 2000 Population Data for Connecticut's Towns - A series of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets compiled by the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) from the US Census Summary File 1. The Excel files contained on the DPH site supplement the population counts included in your community level data packets provided at the February 2006 SPF-SIG TOT Meeting (the population files already provided are derived specifically from these state issued spreadsheets). You will be able to use the Excel Spreadsheets provided on the DPH site to determine racial/ethnic and gender break downs by town. These files represent Connecticut's official census data and are often used by Connecticut's state agencies. For consistency, please ONLY use these files for your demographic data; DO NOT use population count data compiled from other sources.
• Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) Town Profiles - These 2 page reports are available for all of Connecticut's 169 towns. Each report presents the most recent town-level statistics available including demographic, economic, education, housing, labor force, government, and quality of life data. The latest year the reports are available is 2006.
• Governor's Prevention Initiative for Youth 2000 Student Survey - Copies of the GPIY 2000 District Level Reports in PDF format. If your town is not listed, use the ERG Data for a particular town from the State Report as a proxy for the town.
• Connecticut's Prevention Needs Assessment 1997 Student Survey - Copies of the 1997 Student Survey District Level Reports in PDF format. If your town is not listed, use the ERG Data for a particular town from the State or ERG specific report as a proxy for the town.
• Connecticut GPIY/SIG Substance Use Data Sources Website - This site which is part of the DMHAS website was originally developed for the state's original State Incentive Grant. It allows you to find substance use data reports by town and lists the report itself (if available) and the appropriate contact to request the report. It typically includes the 2000 and 1997 Student Surveys as well as other surveys conducted by DMHAS, UConn, DPH, and other public or private organizations that were identified for a town when the listing was compiled (1998-2001). Some statewide resources which may contain town-specific information have been updated in 2003.
• DMHAS Social Indicator Reports - The State of Connecticut Social Indicators reports are based on data collected by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services as part of the recent statewide prevention needs assessment funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.
• Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) - Courtesy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program was conceived in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to meet a need for reliable, uniform crime statistics for the nation. In 1930, the FBI was tasked with collecting, publishing, and archiving those statistics. Includes data by year on the number of violent and property crimes for police departments and university/colleges.
• CT Department of Public Safety UCR and NIBRS - includes compilations of uniforn crime report (UCR) and National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) arrest data compiled by Connecticut law enforcement agencies and submitted to the Department of Public Safety.
• Drug Overdoses in Connecticut - A report to the General Assembly on fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses in Connecticut (January 2004).
• Connecticut State Department of Education Disciplinary Offenses NEW! - Data available from the Department of Education with district level specific reports related to disciplinary offenses including Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Suspensions and Expulsions for the 2005-2006 school year.
• Connecticut State Data Center - A project of the University of Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis and the Office of Policy and Management, the Connecticut State Data Center provides population projections statewide, by town, by town group, and by county.

The sites listed below are helpful for SEW Members and include links to materials provided by SAMHSA and their SPF-SIG contractors to support the SPF-SIG Process.

• State Epidemiological Workgroup State Training Workshops - Materials distributed at the various grantee meetings and workshops on State Epidemioligical Workgroups organized by PIRE.
• State Epidemiological Data System (SEDS) - This SAMHSA Web site makes epidemiological data available to States for purposes of substance use prevention needs assessment, planning, and monitoring. This site was created primarily as a resource for State Epidemiology Workgroups (SEWs) funded by CSAP in support of its Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF).
• SPF-SIG Cross Site Evaluation Website - A repository of information about the SPF-SIG Cross Site Evaluation maintained by Weststat. Includes information from Grantee Meetings, Committees, the NOMS, State Level Quarterly Reporting, and more.
• Surgeon General's Call to Action - The recent call to action to prevent and reduce underage drinking by the US Surgeon General.
