Medical Humanities
Art and Medicine
Doc Art - Eric Avery, M.D. is a physician-artist. He is a printmaker, papermaker and physician/psychiatrist working in the HIV and Hepatitis clinics and hospital wards at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. His art, primarily prints, explore issues such as human rights abuses and social responses to disease (HIV) and Emerging Infectious Diseases, death, sexuality and the body. Dr. Avery's web site displays his prints, papermaking and art/medical actions exploring the liminal space between art and medicine.
Laura Ferguson: Visual Skeleton Series - Works that explore issues at the intersection of art and medicine. Her arresting and beautiful drawings of a woman's body through which the interior skeleton is visible represent the art and body of Laura Ferguson, a visual artist who has severe scoliosis. According to the artist, her "drawings seek to create a visual counterpart to the texture of kinesthetic experience: that inner-body awareness that is at once the most universal yet most private aspect of being." Her website currently displays 48 color images. The Visual Skeleton project is on view at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C. through April, 2005.
Historical Anatomies on the Web - An excellent online exhibit from the History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) chronicling anatomy images from important anatomical atlases currently in NLM's collection.
May H. Lesser (1927-2001) - As an artist she has had the rare experience of being "on-the-inside" of the medical centers of UCLA, the University of Southern California and Tulane University. The Lyman Stowe Library owns an oversized book of her artwork created while shadowing medical students and clinicians entitled, The Art of Learning Medicine. Now deceased, her beautiful artwork lives on at a number of web sites including the National Library of Medicine, Tulane University, and the University of Southern California and her etchings and drawings are in the permanent collections of a number of galleries, museums, and Medical Centers.
Stolen Dreams - A Harvard School of Public Health exhibit featuring photography on child labor by David Parker, MD, MPH, an Occupational Medicine physician and photographer.
History of Medicine
American Association for the History of Medicine - North America's oldest continuously functioning scholarly organization devoted to the study of all aspects of the history of the health professions, disease, public health, and related subjects.
Dittrick Medical History Center - A medical history center which consists of a museum, rare medical book collection, images and medical archives located at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. They were kind enough to allow us to show two pieces of one-of-a-kind medical artwork on our web site, De Scott Evans' Medical Still Life (above) and Ivo Saliger's Der Artz on our contact page. Images from the History of Medicine - An online database of 60,000 images in the prints and photograph collection of the History of Medicine Division (HMD) of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The collection includes portraits, pictures of institutions, caricatures, genre scenes, and graphic art in a variety of media, illustrating the social and historical aspects of medicine.
Robert U. Massey History of Medicine Society - An association of individuals at the University of Connecticut Health Center interested in presentations and discussions on the history of medicine. It is coordinated by Dr. Ralph Arcari who has an appointment in the Department of Community Medicine and the Division of Medical Humanities.
Wellcome Trust History of Medicine - The Wellcome Trust is an independent research-funding charity that aims to improve human and animal health. They have specific interests in the History of Medicine.
Medicine and Literature
Danielle Ofri - Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD is a writer, editor, and practicing physician living in New York City. Her latest book, Singular Intimacies: Becoming a Doctor at Bellevue (Beacon Press, 2003) is the story of becoming a doctor by immersion at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country.
Roster of Physician Writers - A list compiled by Daniel C. Bryant, M.D. of physician-writers of a "creative" nature - fiction, poetry, drama, essay in the United States. It includes the names, life-dates, and nationalities of the physician writers.
Narrative Medicine - A program at Columbia University that offers seminars, colloquia, conferences and a discussion list dedicated to narrative medicine.
Medicine and Poetry
Bellevue Literary Review (BLR) - A literary review and a forum for illuminating humanity and human experience which publishes previously unpublished works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry that touch upon relationships to the human body, illness, health and healing. BLR is published by the Department of Medicine at New York University.
General Medical Humanities Resources
NYU's Literature, Arts, and Medicine Database - An annotated bibliography of prose, poetry, film, video and art which was developed to be a dynamic, accessible, comprehensive resource in Medical Humanities, for use in health/pre-health and liberal arts settings.
Medical Humanities Research Database - A comprehensive educational resource for the use of all those interested in the use of the arts and humanities in medical education and research. It is maintained by faculty at University College London.

Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine - An online journal published by Yale University.
Humanities (General)
National Endowment for the Humanities - NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
Connecticut's Humanities Council - Established in 1974 as the state-based committee of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council awards grants to nonprofit organizations and conducts programs itself in education, public policy and culture.
Robert Pope Foundation - A charitable organization based in Canada that promotes educational, artistic, and health-related programs in an effort to provide quality life at all stages of living. The site features an online gallery of Robert Pope's work including pieces on illness and healing.

Brody's Department of Medical Humanities - The Department of Medical Humanities at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University carries out a three-fold mission of professional education, research, and service.
Centre for Medical Humanities - A center in the Department of Primary Care & Population Sciences at the Royal Free and University College Medical School in the UK.
Institute for the Medical Humanities at UTMB - A medical humanities institute at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
University of Rochester's Division of Medical Humanities - The Division of the Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary group drawn from the medical specialties and the humanities. Its application of philosophy, history, literature, and jurisprudence to the study of medicine and the care of patients is a part of the University of Rochester's traditional consideration of the social and ethical contexts of medicine.
Medical Humanities Interest Group at UT Southwestern - Medical Humanities Interest Group (MHIG) plans to organize humanities activities that will broaden and deepen the humanities experience of students, residents, and faculty at UT Southwestern.
UCI Program in Medical Humanities and Arts - A program at the University of California Irvine in Medical Humanities. Site includes a collection of original writing, photography, and artwork by members of the UCI community called, Plexus Online.
UConn-Storrs Humanities Institute - An institute directed by Richard Brown, Ph.D. on the main University of Connecticut campus in Storrs which offers faculty and student fellowships, seminars, and workshop programs in the humanities, broadly defined.

American Society of Law, Medicine, & Ethics - A great site with educational information at the nexus of law, medicine, & ethics. The society publishes several journals too.
American Journal of Law and Medicine - A law review fulfilling the need to improve communication between legal and medical professionals. Issues contain professional articles and case notes -- on themes in health law and policy, and on the legal, ethical, and economic aspects of medical practice, research, and education -- and health law court decisions and book reviews.
Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law - a nonprofit legal advocacy organization based in Washington D.C. which advocates for the civil rights and human dignity of people with mental disability.
Center for Law and the Public's Health - The Center for Law and the Public's Health at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities is a primary resource on public health law, ethics, and policy for public health practitioners, lawyers, policy-makers, and others.

HealthPathfinder - HealthPathfinder contains hundreds of annotated links from the Health Law and Policy Institute's Web site to informative Web sites pertaining to health law, health policy, and general health. The site is part of the University of Houston Law Center.
Hirsh Health Law Program - The Hirsh Health Law Program serves as the focal point of health law and law-related policy activities within George Washington School of Public Health and Health Services.
Kopf HealthLaw Group - A general health law practice that focuses on the legal issues of health care providers.
Medical and Public Health Law - Professor Edward P. Richards' site at the University of Missouri - Kansas City Law School.
National Health Law Program - The National Health Law Program is a national public interest law firm that seeks to improve health care for America's working and unemployed poor, minorities, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Public Health Law Program - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Public Health Practice Program Office division's web site contains information on public health laws, discussion groups, education and training, funding opportunities, and other resources developed by CDC and its partners.
UConn's Student Health Law Organization - The University of Connecticut School of Law Student Health Law Organization ("SHLO") represents a diverse cross-section of law students interested in practicing health law following graduation.

Baylor Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy - A center at Baylor Medical College which develops teaching and research programs that address the moral, legal and public policy questions raised by health care and the biomedical sciences.
Duke University's Center for the Study of Medical Ethics and Humanities - This Duke Center aims to promote excellence in scholarship and teaching in medical ethics and the medical humanities.
Harvard University's Center for Ethics and the Professions - A University Center that encourages teaching and research about ethical issues in public and professional life.
Harvard Medical School's Division of Medical Ethics - A division at in the Harvard School of Medicine to improving medical care and medical education by building greater awareness and understanding of the critical moral, ethical, and social dimensions of medicine through a broad education and research agenda.
Indiana University Program in Medical Ethics - A program established in 1992 similar to the one at UConn, except focused solely on medical ethics. The IU program direct medical ethics education for students and faculty at Indiana University, initiate research in medical ethics, and provide ethics services and consultations to hospitals at the Indiana University Medical Center.
Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University - A teaching and research center at Georgetown University offering ethical perspectives on major policy issues.
MSU's Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences - This center at Michigan State University is committed to supporting reflective practice in health care and in science, by bringing to these fields the resources of ethics and the humanities.
MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at UIC - Established in 1984 at the University of Chicago, it was one of the first centers in the nation devoted to clinical ethics.
Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, Loyola University Chicago - The Institute serves the students and faculty of the Stritch School of Medicine, the healthcare professionals and patients of Loyola University Health System, and professionals from the regional community and across the nation.
Penn's Center for Bioethics - A world renowed Center with over 20 faculty in the University of Pennsylvania schools. They are a leader in bioethics research and its deployment in the ethical, efficient, and compassionate practice of the life sciences and medicine.
SUNY Upstate Medical University's Center for Bioethics and Humanities - A multidisciplinary faculty group conducting courses and research in bioethics and the medical humanities.
Utah's Division of Medical Ethics - A division of Internal Medicine interested in improving patient care by increasing awareness and knowledge of ethical issues in medicine.
University of Buffalo's Center for Clinical Ethics and Humanities in Health Care - A multidisciplinary center at the University of Buffalo which coordinates a variety of clinical and academic activities in the Western New York area surrounding bioethics and humanities.

American Journal of Bioethics - A comprehensive, peer-reviewed journal about ethical issues in medicine and the biomedical sciences.
Journal of Medical Ethics - The Journal of Medical Ethics has is a leading international journal, which reflects the whole field of medical ethics.
Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics - An American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics quarterly journals that contains articles on health care quality and access, managed care, child/maternal health, reproductive health, informed consent, assisted dying, ethics committees, HIV/AIDS, and public health.

American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) - A professional society of more than 1,500 individuals, organizations, and institutions interested in bioethics and humanities. This Web site serves as a source of information for members, prospective members. and anyone interested in bioethics and humanities.
Non-profits
Hastings Center - The Hastings Center is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit bioethics research institute founded in 1969 to explore fundamental and emerging questions in health care, biotechnology, and the environment.

Bioethics.net - Founded in 1993 as the first bioethics website, bioethics.net and The American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB) have grown to become the most read source of information about bioethics, visited millions of times every month by readers from around the world and every walk of life. A truly informative site.
NIH's Bioethics Resources on the Web - This section of the National Institute of Health's web site contains a broad collage of annotated bioethics web links, and while this list is comprehensive, it is not totally inclusive. The listed resources provide background information and various positions on issues in bioethics.
